My subjects, I have recently (as of November) stated TikTok... I have never seen more misinformation spread around. I genuinely hate it. Don't even get me started on the people who defend Anne purely because Natalie Dormer played Anne in The Tudors. Today I am here to bust some myths people genuine believe.
Anne Boleyn was supposed to burn at the stake:
woah. I see this one too much. First of all, for Anne's executioner to get there in time for May 19th, coming from Calais, he had to be ordered prior to Anne's trial. Henry already decided she would be beheaded.
Anne Boleyn slept with her brother:
we recently fired someone from our channel for being a terrible human being, and this lie was something she genuinely believed. To be fair, we cannot confirm or deny it, but the mere idea doesn't seem like something Anne would do.
Anne refused to sleep with Henry:
entirely untrue. Anne was pregnant during their January wedding. For those who would deny this, let's do some simple math:
February
March
April
May
June
July
August
September
if she got pregnant in Late January, she'd be 8 months pregnant in September. However, if she got pregnant in December, she'd give birth in September, which she did. Elizabeth was not premature, and they would have written it down if she was.
Anne Boleyn haunted Henry after-death:
this one is just.. stupid. Henry did not see a headless Anne spider-crawling. I genuinely don't feel like I need to elaborate. "Henry, where is my head?" "In the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula"
Anne Boleyn got to choose how she died:
no. No one in Tudor England, Queen or not, got to chose how they died. Plus, like I mentioned earlier, the swordsman was ordered before she was declared guilty.
Anne's body was taken and buried elsewhere:
Annes body and head were wrapped in cloth and put in an arrow chest before being hurriedly buried in the chapel. There is no question on where she's buried. There is no reason to believe otherwise.
Anne's sixth finger:
another myth I wish would die. Despite the funny Horrible Histories skits, it's entirely untrue and was made up after her death. There also was no wart on her hand.
Anne was accused of Witchcraft:
again, I wish this would die. She wasn't accused of witchcraft, however she was accused of:
Adultery
Incest
Treason
so, please help kill this myth.
Anne gave her ladies a seperate speech on the Scaffold:
some VERY unreliable sources claim she gave her ladies a seperate speech in the scaffold. This is untrue, and these ladies were not the ones who served her in the tower. Not only did she not give them a speech, she had no reason to.
Jane Seymour wanted Anne arrested:
this one will probably kill me. Jane had nothing to do with Anne's death besides the fact Henry married her next. She was forced into this situation, meanwhile Anne had no trouble being publicly courted by a married Henry.
Anne is a Martyr:
the reason I'm covering this one has some backstory. Some prick on Pinterest made a post saying Jane deserved to die because Anne died. I go to her profile because I'm like "what the hell," and her bio says "Anne Boleyn is a Martyr." Anne is NOT a martyr. She did not die for her faith, she died because of her inability to produce an heir.
why do myths like this never die?
I wish I knew. I really do, because it's annoying. Whenever I interview someone, I always ask them what myth they wish they could kill once and for all. Remember: ALWAYS call out misinformation.
